What are the top 3 categories in a balanced product roadmap?
Based on my experience, I have categorized product roadmap initiatives into 3 categories. Let’s have a quick look at them :
Innovation
These initiatives are future bets toward taking a leap toward completely revamping the user experience. It’s strategically aligned toward the overall product vision.
Examples :
- New features
- Revamping current features
- Change in Tech architecture for better stability & robustness
- 3rd party integrations
Enhancement
These initiatives aim at deriving improved results from the already existing features, feature optimization, POC & A/B tests & thus delivering additional user & business value.
Examples :
- Improvement in the conversion funnel
- POCs ( Proof of Concept initiatives )
- A/B testing
- A tactical initiative aiming to improve OKRs
BAU ( Business As Usual )
Features or initiatives aimed at maintaining the current product & business are part of this category.
Examples :
- Security
- Data privacy
- Performance
- Technical debt
- Bug fixes
- Internal tooling & dashboard
