WhatsApp has released a new 2.21.14.24 update, which brings a new user interface for calls as well as a new feature for group calls.

The calling window has been completely revamped, the controls like buttons for mute, camera switching, closing video, and declining the call are all place in a floating taskbar below.

Call end button 📞🔚

Previously the call end button was in the middle and it has moved to the extreme right resulting in cognitive load for the users as they might accidentally click on the video icon in the middle to end the call.

👎It’s is counter-intuitive given how we are used to receiving calls on smartphones. Based on the UX principles, it should emulate the same UX so as to reduce the learning curve for the users.

Add participant button ➕👥

Previously the “Add participant” icon was on the top right corner. It was intuitive & easy to access with just one click.

Now it is moved to the swipe up sleeve which requires 2 clicks to access the “Add participant” icon.
👎It is going to create confusion for many non-tech-savvy users as they won’t be able to easily discover this option.

Quick Suggestions 💡

  • Currently, there is ample real estate being wasted on the top right and left corners, it would be advisable to move the mute 🎙️ icon to the top right corner. Since Whatsapp doesn't have a majority use case of formal/professional meetings or conversations, the mute icon usage will be pretty less.
  • Replace the 🎙️ mute icon with ➕👥 “Add participant” button thus reducing the 2 clicks and thus making its discovery intuitive. Once the user clicks on “Add participant”, it can open up the bottom sleeve to get the list of participants in the call.
