Product Manager vs Project Manager
Let’s end the debate today.
Product managers & project managers often work closely together on the same projects. Often the roles sound confusing & it’s important to understand that both the roles are critical, interdependent & key to the success of the overall team.
Let’s understand the from an overall perspective & then we will dig into the roles and responsibilities of the respective roles.
Product managers own the “why” & “what” , engineers own the “how” & project managers owns the “when” .
Now, I would like to highlight the key differences so it makes it easy for you to understand the roles.
Why shouldn’t product managers play the role of project manager 🚫 ?
Product managers own the strategy. They should be deeply engrossed in user understanding, identification of pain points, brainstorming over innovative ideas & own the prioritization of the product backlog.
They need to ensure that they are ahead of the curve so that they are able to plan effectively and generate sufficient initiatives for their engineering teams. If the product manager is also deeply engrossed in day-to-day activities and management, then they won’t able to complete the core responsibilities of their role and it will adversely impact the overall product vision.
