Product Manager Onboarding plan for First 30/45/60 days

In order kick-start the journey in a structured manner , PM needs an onboarding plan for first 60 days. The plan can be rudimentary but it needs to be in place especially for the new PM . It also helps to build the credibility for the PM since it showcase their PM skills as well. A well written document with the action item & their status would help to a lot in the long run for the PM.

First 30 days

HR Onboarding

  • Furnishing Background details ,Salary details , PF details , HR onboarding training , etc
  • Go through the videos about organization vision & strategy
  • Watch the CEO message for the new joinee

Know your Product Team

  • Understand the various Product Stream
  • Get access to Product tools & Product dashboards
  • Understand Product strategy & vision
  • Shadow the co-PM in your team
  • Get yourself accustomed to the team’s best practices
  • Setup introductory 1:1 with your manager

Know your Buddy

  • Add yourself to all the meetings of the buddy
  • Take notes and notice the POCs for various functions
  • Get yourself added to the latest email threads & understand the background

Engage with co-workers & cross functional teams

  • Share your introduction email covering professional journey , interests , hobbies , educations, etc
  • Setup 1:1 with external stakeholders- Design /Engineering /Marketing /Operations/CX
  • Daily check-ins with the buddy
  • Bi-weekly 1:1s with the manager

Understand the customer & product in detail

  • Attend CX calls & identify personas
  • Conduct onsite/zoom discussion
  • Go through Playstore reviews
  • Get yourself added to the CX tickets
  • Download the app & try different scenarios in detail -Go through the successful flow & failure flow
  • Do join the domain knowledge session to get hold of the new domain

Outcome

  • Kickoff the new project with your manager & get started
  • Start preparing the spec sheet of the project
  • Share feedback regarding the onboarding process
  • Go through the curate product readings to introduce & apply new learnings

First 45 days

Know your Product Team

  • Take over the primary PM role completely & start leading the discussions

Engage with co-workers & cross functional teams

  • Have subsequent discussion to understand the team better & initiate next level of domain knowledge

Understand the customer & product in detail

  • Connect with customers of diverse personas & background
  • Develop hypothesis
  • Understand edge cases & their instrumentation

Outcome

  • Initiate & lead execution for Q2 FY21 launch
  • Start preparing the Quarterly roadmap for the Product team by end of 45 days

First 60 days

Know your Product Team

  • Lead the team of PMs/Product Analyst
  • Share your feedback & decisive opinion on the current processes

Understand the customer & product in detail

  • Connect with customers of diverse personas & background
  • Develop hypothesis
  • Understand edge cases & their instrumentation

Outcome

  • Clarify & define OKRs
  • Start achieving the OKRs
