CEOs, CPOs & PMs across different organizations claim to have been operating out of a product-driven culture but usually, those are superficial in nature and thus it requires a set of clear definitions to substantiate this claim. The most pertinent questions such What is the definition of a product-driven approach? How to measure the success of that approach? What are the struggles in this approach? remain unanswered.

Here is the list of 6 key principles of a product-driven approach:-

  • Close collaboration between Product & Design teams
Understanding the user pain points across various touchpoints through frequent interactions, focus group studies, etc ensures that Product & Design teams are championing the users inside the organization and that acts as a building block of product-driven culture.
  • Aim for healthy coverage of users
Product solutions are biased towards solving for multiple users. The approach caters to the set of users which will have maximum impact. The Pareto principle comes in handy in such a situation. Product strategy invests ample time in providing a holistic solution.
  • Achieve scale through technology
It’s imperative for a product solution to achieve scale so that it can reach its optimum level of success. MVPs are designed to test the waters but post that every roadmap should solve the key aspects through automation and technology by replacing manual or operations tasks.
  • Predict the future needs of the users
Proactively listening to the users and observing their behavior across different domains can help to access the future needs of the user and thus it can help the organization to get prepared with their next set of features that can solve the needs of the users.
  • Deploy cost-benefit analysis in decision making
Engineers are a scarce resource and it’s very crucial for the PMs to align the features in anticipation of the future needs of the users. This will help the organization to innovate at a faster scale. As a result, PMs have to ruthlessly prioritize their backlog.
  • Make metrics your best friend
Tracking key metrics is a key ingredient of a product-driven culture. It ensures that even the smallest of the feature launch is tracked religiously and learnings are shared with the respective stakeholders to build trust. It ultimately puts maximum ownership on the product team which acts as fuel in driving product-driven culture across the organization.

Following a product-driven approach can be very beneficial for the long-term financial success of the organization. It also ensures that users are happy in this process.
