Framework to tackle imposter syndrome for Product Managers 💼

What are the top 4 symptoms of imposter syndrome?

  • The constant fear that you won’t fulfill the expectations
  • Crediting external factors/people for your achievement
  • Self-doubt on your skillset
  • Belittling your success

Practical steps to tackle imposter syndrome ⬇️

  • Be vocal about imposter syndrome & talk it out 🗣️
When you acknowledge the elephant in the room, it shrinks. You can start with jotting down your thoughts and fear on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. It’s already taxing for the brain to repress negative emotions attached to imposter syndrome, so it’s impending to give these thoughts an outlet. This will help to further improve health & well-being.
  • Being meticulous isn’t the only path to success 🚫 💯
Harmful meticulousness is unpalatable. We are ruthless to ourselves by treating perfectionism as if it is the only way ahead. You should let go of being meticulous all the time. Being an exceptional PM doesn’t involve being exemplary in all the skillset, however, it signifies performing well in key skills & being decent enough in the areas which need improvement.
  • Surround yourself with positive thoughts ➕🧠
You should spend time transforming your inner self-talk to positive proclamations which will devoid your mind from negative habitual thinking & will reschool your mind for a confident outlook. In such scenarios, the thought process should focus on efforts rather than outcomes. Your inputs & efforts are owned & controlled by you. You can work on maximizing them and focus on knocking down your previous best efforts. That would be more motivating & impactful.
  • Acknowledge & accept praise 🙏
PMs suffering from imposter syndrome feel that the admiration is undeserved & try to divert it. It’s advised that you should not shy away from receiving compliments and should respond with the same rigor and gratitude. It’s a good opportunity to get an external reminder about your achievements which can act as a positive reinforcement for you. You can go a step ahead and congratulate your whole team and their efforts in helping you garner that compliment from your stakeholders.
