Follow 3 rules to communicate number in Product Analytics
This article is focussing on summarizing and communicating data in an open and non-manipulative way. It is encouraged, not to influence our audiences’ emotions and attitudes, or convince them of a certain perspective. We just want to tell it how it is, or at least how it seems to be, and while we cannot ever claim to tell the absolute truth, we can at least try to be as truthful as possible.
You can follow these 3 rules of communication :-
Keep quiet & listen first
The 1st rule of communication is to shut up and listen, so that you can get to know about the audience for your communication, whether it might be business, operations, marketing or finance team. We have to put ourselves in their shoes & understand their limitations & misunderstanding. Often we have to control our temptation to sound intelligent always & share more than necessary details.
Be fully aware about your goal
The 2nd rule of communication is to know what is your goal & be fully aware about it.
The aim is to encourage open debate, and informed decision-making. It is considered a good practice to repeat the numbers again to ensure that it is registered in the audiences’ mind. It should follow the 3 pillars of communication shared below : Context , language & graphic design.
Communication = Storytelling
The concept of dataviz (data visualization) is most commonly used for sophisticated audiences , CXO team or data science researchers through a standard ammunition of plots that are selected for their value in gaining understanding and for exploring the data, rather than their purely visual appeal. Often infoviz( infographics) is used to capture the attention of the audience and narrate a beautiful crafted story.
