Human beings have a tendency to follow herd mentality & adopting norms which are acceptable within a group so that we don’t appear as an outlier. Infact we are guilty of Groupthinking. It is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome. Cohesiveness, or the desire for cohesiveness, in a group may produce a tendency among its members to agree at all costs. This causes the group to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation.

Unfortunately, this comes across as a hurdle in innovative thinking & halt generation of new ideas. This is a common phenomenon observed during the brainstorming session where the lack of self-confidence , desire to fit in & avoiding conflict is at large display. Here comes Brainwriting to the rescue.

What is Brainwriting ?

Brainwriting is a straightforward divergent ideation method. In this method the participants don’t share across their ideas through verbal communication, instead the participants responds by writing their ideas about the problem statement on a piece of paper. Post that, they share their written idea to the other participant who go through that idea and append the paper with their new ideas. This process is repeated across the group of participants & after roughly 20 minutes, the facilitator collect the paper & discuss the ideas with the group.

4 Key advantages of Brainwriting ✅

  1. It’s a best method to collect the initial thoughts & avoid the corruption of the ideas due to brainstorming.
  2. Since it is written & not verbal , it helps to generate more number of ideas in comparison to brainstorming which consumes time to express the individual ideas.
  3. It empowers introvert participants to express the ideas more freely since it’s a written method.
  4. In brainstorming, participants has to wait for their turn to express the ideas & participants run the risk of forgetting the ideas. Brainwriting eliminates this risk completely.
